Career expos point the way to a brighter future

More than 600 learners attended two career expos this week in Sarepta and Kraaifontein, hosted by the City of Cape Town’s Community, Arts & Culture Development Department. The aim was to create awareness of the careers and opportunities available to learners.
The career day in Sarepta was aimed at young people with disabilities. Learners from the following schools attended: Axios School of Skills, Bet-El School of Skills, Khayelitsha Special School and Jan Kriel School.
In Kraaifontein, the expo was attended by learners from the following high schools: Kraaifontein, Bernadino Heights, Scottsdene and Northpine Technical.
‘Career expos provide information about professions learners may not have considered previously. An expo can cement a chosen path or open up a world to a previously unknown vocation. Learners were able to see what certain jobs entail, find out more about educational institutions, support services and employment opportunities.
‘They were able to network and explore industries. The Sarepta event is especially heartening as there are career opportunities for those who are differently abled,‘ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
